I am fangirling all OVER the place while writing this.

No long intros today, guys. I am way way way way too excited that I have been able to read this masterpiece, and I really just want to get into it!

Synopsis

For those of you who have been living under a rock, (no really, if you don’t already know Lilly Singh, please note that you are being very severely judged) Lilly Singh is a SUPERWOMAN. With that also being her Internet name, Lilly is an Indian Canadian comedy YouTuber who now earns in millions. She started making videos to fight her depression seven years ago, and now collaborates with Hollywood and Bollywood stars on a regular basis, has done two major world tours with several sold out shows, surpassed eleven million subscribers, launched her own lipstick, wrote a book, started an amazing campaign called ‘#GirlLove’ to fight for gender equality, and become the most inspiring woman on the face of this planet. In ‘How To Be A Bawse’, Lilly shares with us some amazing life lessons and struggles to help us conquer life, not survive it, and become a ‘Bawse’. She tells us her experiences, her mistakes, her regrets, her dreams, and everything she’s learnt on her incredibly long journey, in a way that is SOOOOOOOOOOOO fun to read. No, it’s not YA. Yes, it is SUPERB.

Writing

First off, no there won’t be a ‘Characters’ or ‘Storyline’ section, because this is not a novel. It’s more of a life guide (but not those boring philosophical ones, I was literally in stitches the whole time while reading it). That is why I am going to get straight into the writing, which I am SO EXCITED to talk about. Now, Lilly is an entertainer by profession, not an author. But in this book, she has just proven to the world that she can literally do everything. It must be incredibly difficult to make a book like this seem interesting, and she has completely slayed the game. Lilly is the WITTIEST person I know, and every two lines I was like “OMG I WISH I SAID THAT” or “WAIT LET ME GO AND WRITE THAT DOWN THAT’S GENIUS”. She has the most INCREDIBLE sense of humour, and it reflects in every page. Managing to convey such important lessons to a reader, while also not making it sound too preach-y is not easy, and she’s done it. Also, I loved how unapologetically ‘Lilly’ she is (in the Queen’s own words 🙂 ). If you’ve been watching her videos for a long time like I have, you would know that she has gone through a lot. In this book, she owns up to, accepts, and is proud of both her successes and her failures. Everything she says just makes so much SENSE, and her words have had a huge impact on me. In fact, after reading her book, replaying those sentences in my mind would make me happier and ten times more productive. I truly think this book should be called ‘INSPIRATION GALORE’, because that is exactly what it is. I don’t think I can adequately put into words how much motivation and true-blue inspiration I have picked up from these 300 pages, and even though I’m not one to read these kinda books at all, ‘How To Be A Bawse’ is now the prized jewel of my bookshelf. Really though. I open up this book whenever I need something to keep going, and it never ever fails to deliver. Especially as someone who LOVES a good quote, this book literally pleases my soul.

Binding

YAY! Finally I get to talk about this! I absolutely LOVE when authors go that extra mile to make their books special for the reader. Whether it’s including a map, drawings, coloured side pages or some unique photos, I truly appreciate it when writers add that something extra to their creations. With ‘How To Be A Bawse’ though, Lilly and her team have gone an extra 173946039476597608708525635285971698 miles. I mean it. There are a WHOLE bunch of different fonts, bright colours, special pages, hilarious cartoons, and much more for the reader to feast their eyes on! Ahhh, I especially adore how there is a new photo of her at the start of each chapter (DEAR LORD SHE IS A GODDESS, YOU’LL GET ME WHEN YOU SEE THOSE PHOTOS), and I literally could not handle the beauty. Behold:

Both are pictures from the book, by the way. What I also love is how no two pages are the same, the structure and layout of the text changes with each one, and the colours, oh the colours. I LOVE THEM. PLUS, can we please take a moment to talk about the pages? Even the PAPER was special. It was those super glossy and hard pages that make me feel as if I’m reading something so exclusive and intended for VIPs only. In fact, I became so addicted to turning them, that I even read the acknowledgements, which I never do. Even THAT was hilarious and super fun to read. Girl, will you ever stop over achieving?!

Overall

I think you get the message by now. I mean, I’ve probably said ‘love’ more times in this one post, than I have in real life. I’m not even kidding. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never even heard of Lilly Singh. You should still read this book because of how inspirational and empowering it is. Come on, let’s all be Bawses together. Team Super for life.
