Board Games To Kill The Boredom

A major part of the annual grandma’s-place-in-summer-vacation drill, is meeting all the cousins! Well, not all of them, because I am Indian and my family members are more numerous than grains of sand on a beach. So, most of the cousins (not all of them).

Anywayyy….I absolutely LOVE meeting all my cousins. Just yesterday I spent the whole day with two of my cousin sisters whom I hadn’t met in a long time, and it was such a blast. It’s so amazing that when we get together, we skip the awkwardness and get straight to the part where we’re telling cheesy jokes and my aunt is force feeding me ice cream.

I love my family.

So with these sisters whom I met today, it’s kind of customary to play board games. The whole time. It’s just our thing. And I realised that playing some good old-fashioned board games are such an effective way to kill both time and boredom! It’s a refreshing break from what I do in the summer usually: which is either playing outside in the sun until I am so tanned that I camouflage at night, or reading until my eyeballs fall off my face.

Without further ado, here are my favourite board games:

  1. Good ol’ Monopoly

This is one that you cannot go wrong with! My mom complains that this old-fashioned property dealing game continues for way too long and becomes tiresome after a while, but that makes it perfect when you have a whole lot of time on your hands, and nothing to do. Honestly, my friends and I never get bored of the game even when it drags on for a long time  🙂 . Also, it is so fun to choose between all the versions of monopoly! Each version is better than the last, and they just keep getting better.

2. Scrabble

Every parent’s favourite board game. And why not? Scrabble is one of the most fun educational games out there. It is one of the best ways to learn new vocabulary and think tactically (so that you can score the most points, win, and run around for a week in front of your friends with ‘I WON SRABBLE NOT YOU LOL’ written on your forehead XD ). It’s especially entertaining if you are an English lover and a huge lexophile like myself, so you can pull out the weirdest words ever while your friends argue about its existence. Good times, good times 🙂 .

3. Pictionary

This one has been the cause of those riotous laughs where the person actually looks and sounds a bit demented, way too many times. An artistic version of Charades, this game is perfect for the drawing maestros, but I actually find it considerably more entertaining when the players can’t sketch to save their lives. It is so hilarious to watch. For example, one time when I was playing this with two of my best friends, one of us had to draw a car going over a speed bump (the word was ‘speed bump’). The closest guess? UFO on a pimple. Yup. No joke. It was a crazy time XD .

4. Carrom

An Indian favourite. Carrom is the best game everrrrr. The objective of carom is to use the striker, by flicking your fingers, to flick the other counters into any one of the four holes at the corners of the board. There are a whole bunch of rules, and the different coloured counters are all worth a different number of points. At the end, the player with the most points wins! I don’t have a carom board but my best friend does, so I am constantly showing up at her house during vacations to get her to play with me. They are all too happy to oblige. It’s the best 🙂 .

5. Ludo

Another Indian summer-time classic. My cousin actually taught me how to play yesterday ( I was so ashamed that I didn’t know ahah ), but I quickly came to love it. The objective is to get all four of your coloured pieces to their respective ‘homes’. The first one to do this wins! Again, there a whole bunch of rules which I am much too lazy to delve into, but be sure to give it a try. It’s guaranteed fun.

That brings us to the end of the list! I hope you guys liked it, and be sure to tell me what you thought if you’re trying any of them for the first time!

Also, I will be posting twice today to make up for the one I missed yesterday. I was too busy having a gala time with cousins! However I may not always be able to do this make-up post, but I will definitely try my best 🙂 .

But for today, you can expect another post with a delicious cupcake recipe, coming up in a few hours! Thanks for reading 🙂 .
